True Colors

I once heard that a tree shows its true colors only once photosynthesis has stopped and the green of the chlorophyll gives way to the gold or crimson or russet specific to its variety. I find that so interesting–a tree spends most of the year growing and storing energy and only once it begins to rest can you see its “true colors.”

Remember 9-11 - 10 Years Ago Today

I can hardly believe it's been 10 years since that tragic day.

Words escape me! I borrowed my message from Internet Cafe Devotions. The picture and words say what I need to express and more! My heart goes out to all those around the world that were and still are involved.

My thanks go out to all those that fight each day to keep us safe!

Recently I heard that if you read or listen to something new, then the next piece that you should read or listen to should be something old. It’s in the old that we find ourselves, where we’ve been and where we may be going. Today as we reflect on the events of September 11, 2001, may we pause to pray for those who lost their lives that day and in the days beyond protecting our freedom, and those they left behind. We pray too for those whom life changed that day. For those first responders who still today feel the effects of those acts of bravery. We pray God’s mercy and grace be ever theirs.

Are You My Mother?

Earlier on my blog there is a picture of a nest with some perfect Robin's eggs tucked inside. Well, that nest did not have a happy ending. The wind destroyed the nest and the eggs. I didn't even have the heart to blog about it.

A couple of days ago - we discovered a baby bird that had fallen out of it's nest. Another Robin. She was still alive, but no feathers and we knew she would not survive. She did not - or maybe it was a he.

Yesterday, Lizzie called me outside to say she had found a baby bird. Well, I was thinking she had found the "hidden" baby bird, but that wasn't so. ANOTHER baby had dropped out of our tall Oak and was on the ground. I'm sure it was from the same nest. This bird can walk a little and has some feathers. She's incredibly young and cannot fly. I moved her so that she could be found. I sat and watched the larger Robins come and feed her.

Lizzie and I made her a nest to keep her safe. I was afraid the mother would not return, but I watched the mother perch on the side of the box and feed her baby.

Last night - I panicked. I remembered that the baby in the box was on the ground and needed to be moved so that the ground predators would not eat her. Hubs got out the flashlight and perched the box in a tree for safe keeping. At least that was the plan.

This morning, she's still alive. She's tweeting and opening her mouth to be fed. I'm hoping the mother Robin will hear her plea and return to feed her. We left her in the same spot as yesterday.

Flowers, Specifically - Portulaca

I am a floral type! Flowers of any kind draw me in. Sure, I have my favorites, but I have LOTS of favorites.

From Wiki:
Portulaca (pronounced /ˌpɔrtjuːˈleɪkə/,[2] purslane) is the type genus of the flowering plant family Portulacaceae, comprising about 40-100 species found in the tropics and warm temperate regions. They are also sometimes known as Rose Moss or more commonly Moss Roses.

Common Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is widely considered an edible plant, and in some areas an invasive type of weed. Some Portulaca species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the Nutmeg (Hadula trifolii).

Purslane can be eaten raw or cooked, and lends itself to stir fry dishes. Some say it has a slight lemon-like taste and mushroom-like texture. It is relatively easy to grow in more northern climates, including the New England area in the United States.

Here is one that LOVES the sun. Since we're having lots of sun and heat - these are flourishing and open up daily to share their color.

I love providing a new home and a whole lotta love. I do not know the type of Hydrangea this is. If you do - please do not hesitate to let me know. It took lots and lots of years for this one to finally flower, but flower - it has.

How does time seem to get away so quickly? Lizzie started Middle School and is now just about done with 6th grade. I'll admit - it went faster and much better than I could ever imagine!

I'm still sewing and selling on Etsy.

I have managed to find time to plant flowers and enjoy life a little more.

FANTASTIC Spring Break and OBX

Lizzie and I went away for a much needed retreat! We chose the awesome OBX since it only takes us about 2.5 hours to reach. This visit has been our best weather ever for Spring Break. Temps in the low 80s. No humidity. Light winds. PERFECT!

We did more than ever or on our visit. We drove down to Hatteras, walked the awesome nature walk on Pea Island and had an incredible hike through the dunes at Jockey's Ridge State Park! Not to mention - the daily morning walks looking for shells - before the rest of the world is awake! Yes, she's a morning person - just like me! We got plenty of sunshine and just complete down time. What a fantastic time we shared!

Now, back to reality . . . Coming home is always good!

Snow, Snow and MORE Snow

I must admit. It's a perfect day to be inside. Sound of my machine whirrring along. Oatmeal Raisin cookies in the oven and admiring the most BEAUTIFUL day outside - all from the warmth of my humble abode.

Dad and Lizzie - well - they wanted to be out "in it" - so here they are - all bundled up and braving the elements! I give them 30 minutes - MAX! It is bitter and the wind is blowing. Visibility is just about 1/4 mile - and that's it! It's not the kind of snow where you build snowmen or throw snowballs - it's powdery and delicious! No threat to power lines, trees or roofs!

Maymont Park - One of Our Favorite Spots

If you're ever in the local area of Richmond, Virginia. This park is a must for your "to-do" list!

Lizzie and I had the day off yesterday and the weather was Spring like. We took a stroll around the park. Visited the animals. Checked on the herb garden and just enjoyed being outdoors in the fresh air!

In 1886, James and Sallie Dooley acquired farmland on the banks of the James River, where they planned to build a new home. Their architect, Edgerton Stewart Rogers (1860-1901), born and educated in Rome, combined the Romanesque Revival style with the picturesque Queen Anne for the Dooley residence. By 1893, the Dooleys were living in their new 12,000 square-foot, 33-room home, which they named “May Mont,” a name which combines Mrs. Dooley’s maiden name and the French word for hill.

Among historic house museums, the Maymont Mansion is rare in that no intervening families or adaptive conversions separate us from the original owner’s 32-year occupancy. Despite the fact that no architectural drawings or other early records of its construction and design have survived, its physical integrity and ongoing research has provided a solid base of documentation. Within six months of Mrs. Dooley’s death in 1925, the mansion was opened to the public as a museum. The upper floors’ interiors and a large original collection remained relatively untouched until the beginning of the restoration in 1970. Since the nonprofit Maymont Foundation took responsibility for the estate in 1975, extensive conservation and restoration have greatly enhanced its authenticity, condition, and presentation.

Thus today, Maymont Mansion is a well-preserved document of Gilded Age design and the taste of well-educated, cosmopolitan millionaires. The house also illustrates the dynamic interplay between server and served, working class and upper class and black and white through a compelling exhibition in its restored belowstairs rooms – the culmination of a decade-long research project that was completed in 2005.

Staying Organized in the New Year

I'm one of those personality types, yeah - you know the kind - everything has it's place. Drives my husband and Lizzie crazy - but they have slowly learned to appreciate my way of thinking!

I've decided to try something new and LOVE how this turned out.

I've made a fabric storage box for my patterns and it is available for sale at my Etsy shop. BizzieLizzie This one shown can hold up to 45 patterns - depending upon the bulk of the patterns - could hold a little less or a little more. I like to include a bit of wiggle room so I don't have to struggle to remove them.

I have paired two vintage fabrics in the very fine mustard yellow and olive green colorway. Vintage Waverly. I LOVE it when I come across this magical fabric.

Frosty mornings. How I have yearned to see them. They are here! I found this lovely photo and wanted to share with you as well. Great depiction of Fall and Frost and the beauty it brings!

I love being outside when it is cool and the sun is bright! Nothing stirs my senses quite as much.

Yayyy - I happened to hit the FP on Etsy. This has only been my 3rd time, but each time it happens I am always so excited! This was the first time that it has been an Etsy curated Front Page. It did land at 3:30 in the morning and I was not able to see it, but a fellow Etsian let me know it was there!

While it doesn't always guarantee a sale, it does provide lotsa looks and hearts.

Working on my pictures is the hardest task for me. I'm so happy they chose one of my favorite bags!! Thank you Etsy!!

The Vacation is OVER

But, boy did we have an AWESOME time!!

We went south to PirateLand Campground - just outside of Myrtle Beach in Surfside Beach. We never took a trip into Myrtle Beach except upon our arrival to have lunch.

The rest of the week we swam in the ocean every day! The weather was just perfect!

We did take a day trip down to Charleston since it was only 1.5 hours away. Upon our trip South, we discovered many other places. Murrel's Inlet, Litchfield Beach and Pawley's Island - to name a few. We have plans to return next year. The schools were already back in session, so the crowds were at a minimum. Traffic was even under control - now those things - I can deal with! The longest it took for a seating at dinner time was 30 minutes.

We didn't take many pictures, but there are a few to download and when they are up and running - I'll happily share!

It's great being able to get away, but it is always so nice to return safely home!

Lizzie starts school next week - onto our next adventure!

Meet Sophie

Tulips and Pottery

AND, my love of vintage!

I've always been an avid treasure seeker. And, I am only willing to pay a certain price for my treasures - or otherwise - I'd not be able to seek so often.

Pottery is something that has caught my eye many, many years ago. I love it when I find an older piece that draws me near. I never hunt for particular names. Colors - yes - that is what I am drawn towards. Yellow being the number one color that I search out.

Well, when I found this lovely gravy boat and it was priced $2.98 - I did not want to pay that for it, so I sat it back down. Could not stay away from it and visited the piece 3 times before finally realizing I could not leave that store without it in my possession. Haven't a clue as to the make, only that it is stamped u.s.a - that was good enough for me.

I have collected tulips since I was a child. I adore the flower. Am enamored with Holland and all that it has to offer and want to visit there one day - soon.

Many of you know - I sell on Etsy and I adore it. Well, there is so much incredible talent there that it is hard to grasp at times. You have a continuous craft show without the crowds right in the comfort of your own home - 24 hours a day. I've gotten to know a few of the sellers and am enriched by what they have to offer.

When I saw this vintage tulip hand embroidered - I knew I had to make it mine. I never asked a price. I was hoping it wouldn't hurt too much and before you know it - it was mine. Not only that - it was in my hands 2 days after paying for it! Now, how is that for service? I had envisioned making this sachet and putting it in my purse so that I could always carry my tulip around, but when it was finished - I couldn't bear leaving it there in my dark bag. So it sits in my top drawer and I visit it daily! My sachet covers are refillable. After a time when the lavender inside has worn it's way down - I'll just pull the enclosure out and stick in another!

I'm very blessed. My husband is not only a great husband(most of the time) but he is an incredible father - all of the time! We spent the day at a public beach we found tucked away on the Chesapeake Bay a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty windy when we arrived, but we waited it out and had the beach all to ourselves. We hunted for sea glass and found lots of treasures! We can't wait to return! Love ya honey!

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise

Well, I've finally realized - I'm not getting any younger - Imagine that! I decided it's time to return to some exercising! How I made it through Boot Camp - I'll never know. I think I was too scared to NOT make it through. At the end of April I elected to try out Curves and see what that was all about. And, while it is very convenient and easy to do - it did not provide the results I was looking for. It did do some great toning and set the pace for exercise. I stuck it out for a month and now I am onto walking! I have an accountability partner for walking and this past week has been awesome!! The walking is more effective, to me, than Curves will ever be AND it's totally FREE! That I like even better. It rained on Friday and we weren't able to get in our walk. The first week - we walked a little over 9 miles in 4 days. I'm stoked and can't wait until Monday to start all over again!

Happy Birthday Elizabeth - I cannot believe my baby girl turned 10. Where did the 10 years fly off to? How can it be that she is now 10. Double digits is what she is calling it! I LOVE coiled baskets and have purchased a few. When I found out that my awesome local quilt shop was holding a class - I immediately signed on the dotted line.

I'm not much of a class person, and yes - believe it or not - I was the youngest chica there - but that's okay - look what I came away with . . .

You know the old saying - March has come in like the Lion he is . . .

We're all doing cartwheels! It has been years - close to 7 - since we've gotten any kind of snow coverage like this. Just this past Thursday and Friday it was 67 degrees here in Richmond - so you just never know!!

Hubby got to come home early and I am thrilled. Mama Bear doesn't do snow any more - especially when it is FRIGID out and the wind is blowing 20-30 mph! Daddy Bear - you can't keep him out of it. He's such a great father - just brings water to my eyes thinking about how lucky we are as a family to have him as head of it!

Lizzie has been on pins and needles - all day long !!!! I have been trying to sew and trying to keep her occupied at the same time and it just couldn't be done - I'm officially worn out!

I wanted to share with you - our little piece of heaven all covered in snow. The first day after a nice snowstorm is just bliss! I'm glad I get to be a part of it.

Grandma's Hands

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands. When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was okay.

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was okay. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. "Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking," she said in a clear voice strong.

"I didn't mean to disturb you, Grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were okay," I explained to her.

"Have you ever looked at your hands?," she asked. "I mean really looked at your hands?"

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.

Grandma smiled and related this story:

"Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled shriveled and weak, have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life.

"They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war.

"They have been dirty, scraped and raw , swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse.

"They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand.

"They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well, these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer.

"These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of life. But more importantly, it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when He leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ."

I will never look at my hands the same again, but I remember God reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home.

When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I think of grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my
face.

When you receive this, say a prayer for the person who sent it to you, and watch God's answer to prayer work in your life. Let's continue praying for one another.

Passing this on to anyone you consider a friend will bless you both.

Happy Birthday Brother

Well, here we are - one year later and my brother would have turned another year older on this day. The above picture was taken a year ago in April on Lizzie's birthday. He was gone a month later. While he wasn't in best form, he was here with me!

Unfortunately, on February 26th of 2008 - we found out that he had cancer and the most time he had left was a year. That was so hard to digest. I just couldn't even think about it. He's young - mid 50s. So full of life! Well, within a week of finding out - he had to visit a specialist, who then determined he had about 3-6 months to live. That was debilitating - for our whole family. How could God take my brother whom I was in constant contact with daily - away from me. Yeah, I know - very selfish and unfortunately - I still feel that way. We buried him a day before my birthday - May 19, 2008. This has been a life altering event for me. He is the brother that got me started selling on-line. Seriously, we talked on the phone at least once daily, most of the time - more than that. He used to call me so much it got on my stinking nerves and he KNEW it and would laugh! We saw eye-to-eye on a lot of stuff. We were like night and day, but I am thankful I got to share the last 8 years getting to really know him. I miss our relationship - I don't have that same type of relationship with any other member of my family. I miss it. I know that he is in a much better place. He is free from pain or worry. It's just us that are left without him that feels such a profound loss. My parents are stumbling through this. I've watched my mother's health spiral out of control. It is so hard to deal with. I cannot imagine losing my Lizzie and living to talk about it.

He was just with us and now he is gone. I know that death is certain in all our lives, but I just wasn't prepared to lose my favorite brother!

Happy Birthday Michael! I love you so! I know you're looking down on us right now and that helps to sustain me. Until we meet again . . .

Oh, LOVE is in the air. I love the month of February and what it brings - especially Valentine's Day.

We love celebrating the LOVE here in our household on Valentine's Day. Whether you are single, in a relationship or married - it's worth celebrating. I didn't have a significant other for a very, very long time. Now that I do - we go out of our way to celebrate the day of "Love"! When I was single - I made it a point to share the love with family members, friends and those that needed an extra boost that day! Sharing the love - that's what it means to me and my family. An extra dose on that day!

Breakfast begins with something sweet and continues on throughout the day. I'm so excited that Valentine's Day falls during the weekend this year!!

I'm always elated when I get custom bag requests and the buyer leaves the designing up to me!! Don't get me wrong - if you know what you want and want me to sew something up for you - I'm there too, BUT nothing gets my creative juices flowing more than the buyer wanting - "mish-moshy patchwork hippie type" bag - now that's F-U-N!! This Full Moon Forest has been the funnest to create with and has brought alot of attention to my place. Sadly, I have very little of it left and am choosy as to what I'm willing to sew up for someone!! =0) Absolutely LOVE how this bag turned out and cannot wait for my customer to receive it!! She has been an absolute dream to work with and have enjoyed creating this - just for her!! Unfortunately or fortunately for my buyer - as the case may be - I don't have enough of this fabric to make another - so this bag is truly one of a kind!! =0)

We Have a New President

Well, this scripture landed smack dab in my in-box to remind me to BE STILL! I am a staunch Republican and yesterday was very unsettling. A few of my friends are Democrats - and we all have managed to "agree" to "disagree" and remain friends LOL! =0) I'll be honest - I did not watch the inauguration and have no clue as to why so much money was spent for the occasion. Who cares what kind of dress his wife was wearing. Is that going to make a difference in how our Country is run? I have a busy mind. I'm going to pray fervently that our new President does what he has promised to do. I'm going to pray that his family remain safe and sound during the next 4 years. I'm going to pray as he leads along the way that the folks that voted him in office do not turn on him if he makes mistakes. We are all human - we are all going to make mistakes. I'm going to pray that I be tolerant of our new leader. I'm going to pray that he listen to the people - not just the ones that voted for him.

Looks like I'm going to be doing a lot of praying!! =0)

I can hardly believe it's been 10 days since my last blog post. Here it is the eve of Christmas and I'm wondering where the 10 days could have possibly disappeared. I'm still wrapping gifts, cleaning the house and getting ready for Christmas.

I'm trying to reflect a little amongst the hustle and bustle exactly what Christmas is all about and to keep that as my main focus. Honestly, it's not easy and am thankful for God's grace that he wraps around me during these busy times in my life.

I hope you too, amongst the hustle and bustle take a few minutes of your time to reflect what Christmas really means to each of you. I'd love to hear your favorite Christmas story or blessings that you've been fortunate enough to receive through the years.

My funniest Christmas happened when I was 10 years old. For those that don't know me well - I'm from a family of 8 kids - so Christmas has always been a bit chaotic around our house. One year - during the wee hours of the morning - all of us kids decided to get up WAY too early to see if Santa had arrived. We plotted and planned and the older brothers and sisters drilled us younger ones as to how we should proceed. Well, Santa had arrived and boy were we ever overjoyed. My parents, on the other hand, were not thrilled with us finding our Christmas Loot - oh so early. While we are knee deep in the dark in the goods - my father bellows from his bedroom that we best not be out of the bed or we would be in BIG trouble!! Well, all of the little mice scattered. One sister had one new boot on and one off - clanking down the hall as she flew. I, behind her, tripped over the rug down the hall - yes, hardwood floors, stubbed my toe and it began bleeding all over the place. That was it - lights flew on and we were all caught red handed with the goods. My parents weren't angry though, and after that escapade we got to check out all we had received. We were overjoyed. My foot sure hurt! That was a very long day ahead for all of us. We didn't get up quite that early the next year.

I lost my brother this year in May. I was closest to him and miss him dearly! He will surely be missed this year at Christmas. I know he's looking down upon us and laughing at all our silly fun we had during the Christmas season!!

Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Life is VERY busy right now AND, my blog is certainly suffering. =0) This time of the year always seems to sneak up on us and before we know it - it's over. We are trying to keep our focus on what Christmas is truly about this year.

While we enjoy unwrapping gifts and trimming up the tree, we are trying to teach Lizzie why exactly Christmas is celebrated. Watching her come to an understanding that Christmas is the birthday of Christ is just amazing to us both.

It's not easy though. We love seeing Elizabeth so excited with Santa's visit, but as long as our focus is on Him - I just know things will go as planned!

Thanksgiving in Pigeon Forge Tennessee

Well, it has been a while since I've added anything new! We have been away in Pigeon Forge, TN! This is the first year we have ever skipped out on a traditional family gathering for Thanksgiving - but we did it!! Don't get me wrong, we missed our family, but boy did we have a blast in TN!! I love heading off to Gatlinburg's crafting community!! There is so much handcrafted goodness going on and We found a place called The Wild Plum Tea Room - OMG - TDF! http://greatsmokyartsandcraftscommunity.com/_shops/wildplum.htm Perfect in every way! I even bought the cookbook. I'm hoping I can replicate that delicious Hot Apple Cake with Caramel drizzled all over it! I'll keep you posted!!

We started out our festive weekend with a play at the Miracle Theater. Have you ever heard of that place? Well - you can check it out here: www.miracletheater.com What a great show! All kinds of singing and dancing and they even brought the animals INSIDE!! Lizzie loved that part!!

We had lunch in Gatlinburg at Bubba Gump's - check it out: http://www.bubbagump.com/ The waiter was such a cutie and he asked us a bunch of trivia questions from the movie - it was a hoot! The food was AWESOME!! I'd give this place 5 thumbs up.
We LOVE eating out and this place was so much fun!!

One thing's for sure - we love going away, but we always love returning home. So happy I could share our trip with you!!

I could not have picked a more perfect model! Lizzie loves my creations and loves to model for me - at times! =0) She is the reason I strive to make this all work. Being a SAHM has been more rewarding for me than any other career I've chosen. Pay is not quite as good, but I learned long ago - money is not everything!! The choices we make as parents are our gifts to our children - hopefully, I'm making the right choice here!

Well, I can hardly believe it is Thanksgiving time again! One of the things I'm most thankful for is my family!! We are going away this year for Thanksgiving to Pigeon Forge, TN and DOLLYWOOD - all done up for Christmas! We can hardly wait. So, because we will miss next weekend and putting up our tree - Dean and Elizabeth are busy putting ours up this weekend - while I'm sewing!! =0) Here's a couple of pictures of them in action.
